PART 2: DRAFT COPY

In this section of your culminating project, you will demonstrate your level of understanding of the research you have just completed. You will build a paper that will include an analysis and interpretation of the data collected in your research phase. This is a time to report on the trends, similarities, and differences, etc., identified during your research. You will discuss any opposing points of view expressed in your sources, and suggest possible explanations for these discrepancies. Clearly identify the implications of your findings. Why is this information important? Relate your findings back to your original purpose (helping others). You will intelligently use this information in order to create viable solutions for that particular culture / social group in the form of a unique social program. When you quote the work of others, be sure to do so in APA referencing style. Your reference list will also be in APA at this point.

You should maintain these headings for your paper:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Research
  • Analysis
  • Proposal
  • Conclusion
  • References

Your essay will follow APA guidelines. It will be 8 pages in length (not including references or title page), double-spaced, with section headings and indented paragraphs. Paragraph and essay structure is very important so consult your GREEN BOOKS for APA style and ask for help as you go.

Abstract: The purpose of this is to give others a quick snapshot of your essay. We're talking 1-2 paragraphs MAX.
Include a brief description of the group you're studying, the location, and issue at hand (think of the 5 W's you learned in English class).
Briefly summarize the research you're undertaking and the overall purpose of the essay. What are some major themes that you explore in the paper?
What is the outcome you have designed for that social group?

Introduction: Introduce yourself as an activist acting on behalf of the group of people you're studying. Then begin to outline the purpose of your essay. Explain the steps you will go through to outline the major issue, and a bit about how you'll be analyzing / using this information. Finally, briefly explain your solution and ask for funding so that you can execute it.

Research: Go back to your research booklet. Sections A to D focus on outlining the people, the place and the problem. It is your job to organize those ideas fluidly.

Analysis: Still in your research booklets, sections E to G focus on analyzing the issue from a number of perspectives. Choose 2 perspectives from: Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology. This is the phase where you pick theories apart, compare them to one another, apply them to your specific group of people. Keep in mind that all the research you're doing will be applied to help people. This will be a common theme through the analysis. What do these theories have to offer?

Proposal: This is the point at which you explain your solution to the problems you have been explaining and analyzing up to this point. It must be backed up by research (this makes your solution credible and likely to be funded). What will your program look like? What will be involved? Who will be involved (both on the helping and receiving ends)? Again, think of the 5 W's. Be clear, specific and detailed. Explain how it will benefit the people involved, both short and long-term.

Conclusion: This is where you meaningfully wrap things up. In a similar tone as your introduction, you will reiterate the research but in a more reflective and brief way. Reiterate brief, key points of your analysis and present your proposal in a sentence or two. This is your last chance to make an impact on your audience so do your best to convince them in as few words as possible.
